Amrita has a unique name that people often mispronounce causing her
frustration and a desire to change it. One day, she discovers a book
that sheds light on the history behind her name. Join Amrita on her
journey as she learns more about herself and embraces her unique
identity!
Jasleen Aulakh (jus-leen aw-luck) lives in Washington with her sister
and two dogs. This is her first book. She was born in Amritsar
(um-rith-sir), Punjab and moved to Canada at a young age. Jasleen is a
special education teacher and marriage and family therapy intern. Her
experience was much like Amrita's. Throughout her life she got unwanted
nicknames like "Jazz" or had her name mispronounced. For a long time she
felt uncomfortable telling people how to say her name correctly.
Learning her own history helped her respect and reclaim her identity.
Jasleen's hope with writing this book is that all people with diverse
names and identities will embrace their unique identities.
Jessica Finstuen grew up in rural Montana until moving to less rural
Montana and then onto Wales, Oregon, California and finally settling in
Washington State. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from Montana State
University in 1999 and has enjoyed creating her whole life. Teaching
special education has been her focus for the last 14 years while raising
two kids, hiking, gardening, and enjoying the Pacific Northwest. The
opportunity to collaborate with Jasleen on this has been a gift.
